3-[(2-Hydroxyethyl)sulfanyl]propanenitrile (HEPN) is a chain reaction substrate that is used in the study of fatty acid and lipid metabolism. It is also used as a model system for studying the physiological activities of mucin, which is an important component of mucus in the nasal cavity and gastrointestinal tract. HEPN has been shown to inhibit soybean lipoxygenase at concentrations below 1 mM. The enzyme linoleyl alcohol dehydrogenase (LAD), which catalyzes the first step in linoleic acid biosynthesis, has also been shown to be inhibited by HEPN. In addition, HEPN inhibits polymerase chain reactions (PCRs). It binds to DNA due to its hydrogen bonding properties and can be used as a competitive inhibitor of caffeine or methyl myristate when they are used as PCR substrates. HEPN also can act as an anti-inflammatory agent by inhibiting prostag
