3-Amino-4-methylhexanoic acid is an enantiomer of the amino acid glycine. It is a chiral compound with a single stereocenter, which can be either R or S. 3-Amino-4-methylhexanoic acid is used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals, such as pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. The most common method for its manufacture involves reacting methylmalonic acid with ammonia. This product has been shown to elute from reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP HPLC) column at a retention time of 12 minutes and to have an acidic pH value. 3-Amino-4-methylhexanoic acid is also soluble in organic solvents such as ethyl acetate, chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, or acetonitrile.
