Oct-1-en-4-ol is a hematophagous (blood feeding) insect odorant. It is an alcohol that is found in the essential oils of plants such as nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. Oct-1-en-4-ol has been shown to be detected by mosquitoes as well as flies and other diptera insects. The olfactory receptor for octanal belongs to the family of G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). Octanal binds to this receptor and activates it, which causes neurons to fire. This activity approximates the response of the human nose when exposed to the odorant methyl anthranilate.
