N,N-Diethylphenylcarbamate is a coumarin derivative that inhibits the activity of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. It has been shown to be active against viruses and malignant cells in vitro. N,N-Diethylphenylcarbamate has a patent for use as an antiviral agent. It is usually synthesized by a reaction of chalcone with diethyl malonate and an anionic catalyst, such as iron chloride or ferric chloride. This process occurs over a period of 10 to 15 hours at room temperature.
