Product Information
- Propanoic acid, 2-bromo-3-methoxy-
2-Bromo-3-methoxypropanoic acid is a by-product of the production of 2,2′-dibromo-3,3′-dimethoxypropionitrile. It has been shown to have impurities and byproducts including 3-bromopropionaldehyde, 3-bromopropane, 1,1′-dibromoethane and dichlorobenzene. The molecular structure of 2-bromo-3-methoxypropanoic acid is an anhydride that can react with alcohols to form esters. This reaction is catalyzed by acids such as sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid. The reaction with methanol produces methyl bromide and acetone as byproducts. Acetone has also been detected in the gas phase when 2-bromo-3 methoxypropanoic acid is heated to decomposition.
