Product Information
1,3-Dichloro-5-isopropylbenzene is a mixture of 2 isomers, 1,3-dichlorobenzene and 5-isopropylbenzene. It has a chlorinated isopropyl group that reacts with an alkali metal to form a chloride. The orientation of the molecules in the crystal lattice can be determined by their melting point. Peroxide decomposes 1,3-dichloro-5-isopropylbenzene into two isomers, each with one electron removed from the original molecule. This reaction produces hydrogen chloride gas and is inexpensively carried out in the laboratory. The isomers are structurally very similar but have different properties because they are mirror images of each other. For example, one isomer has a proton on the carbon atom adjacent to the chlorine atom while the other does not. Isomers are compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structural formulas
