Ophiopogonin D is a natural product from the genus Ophiopogon. It has shown hypoglycemic effects in mice and rats, as well as a transcriptional regulation effect on human cancer cells. Ophiopogonin D also induces caspase-independent cell death, which can be triggered by diverse stimuli. This natural product has been found to inhibit prostate cancer cells in vitro. Researchers are studying its potential use for treatment of prostate cancer patients.
Ophiopogonin D is a polyphenol that is present in the leaves of the plant Ophiopogon japonicus. The molecule consists of an hydroxyl group and an olefinic chain. It can be synthesized using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with an expression plasmid containing the gene encoding ophiopogonin D as a template, followed by purification using HPLC chromatography and butanol extraction.
