1-Benzyl-5-nitro-1H-indole is a ligand that binds to the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha (PPARα) and other transcription factors. It is used in drug screening to identify drugs that are metabolized by drug-metabolizing enzymes, such as cytochrome P450, uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferases, and glutathione S-transferases. 1-Benzyl-5-nitro-1H-indole has been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines in human cells. This compound also binds to a variety of proteins and inhibits their functions, including proteolysis in tissues.
