Description:
Ethyl 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroisoindole-1-carboxylate is an ethyl ester of glycine. It is the product of the condensation reaction between glycine and ethyl formate. This compound has been shown to be an enamine with a pK of 8.2 and a cyclization rate constant (k) of 2 x 10 s cm M. The regioselectivity for this reaction is in favor of the formation of the cis-isomer. The anhydride formed from this reaction reacts with aminomalonic acid to produce a mixture of two mono-, di-, and tricyclic anhydrides which can be separated by chromatography.
