The product was purified by vacuum distillation and characterized by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The product can be used to produce tetracycline. Ethyl 2-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)acetate also has the potential to be used as a building block for synthesis of other compounds, such as an anthracene derivative, which is a molecule that can potentially serve as a fluorescent dye or laser material.
