2-Azabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-3-carboxylic acid is a prodrug that is converted to its active form, 2-azabicyclo-[2.2.1]heptane-3-carboxylic acid, in the body by esterases and other enzymes. It is used for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and arteritis due to its ability to inhibit the activity of protein kinase C (PKC) in endothelial cells.
