2-Ethylhexylmagnesium bromide is a colorless, low viscosity, volatile liquid that can be used as a catalyst in the polymerization of dienes. It has been shown to exhibit high efficiency and thermal stability. 2-Ethylhexylmagnesium bromide is soluble in diethylether and reacts with water to form hydrogen bromide gas. This chemical is an efficient acceptor for fluorine and chlorine. 2-Ethylhexylmagnesium bromide has been used in the synthesis of polymers with various chain lengths, such as polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide. When heated, it emits light at wavelengths between 350 nm and 800 nm. The most intense emission occurs at 480 nm, which corresponds to the energy level at which monomers are excited during polymerization reactions. It also absorbs light between 650 nm and 2500 nm.
