3,5-Dichloro-N-methylbenzylamine hydrochloride is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of a variety of organisms, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex. The bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties have been attributed to its ability to bind to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. 3,5-Dichloro-N-methylbenzylamine hydrochloride also has synergistic effects when used in combination with rifampicin or other antibiotics such as sulphone or chlorinated compounds like chlorine.
