Product Information
- 1-Naphthol,3-amino- (7CI)
3-Aminonaphthalen-1-ol is a hydrolysis product of the drug chloroquine. It has been shown to have antimalarial activity. 3-Aminonaphthalen-1-ol binds to nuclear, chloride, and carboxyamide groups in the parasite's cell membrane, which disrupts ion transport and causes an influx of chloride ions into the cells. This leads to plasmolysis (the collapse of cytoplasmic contents) and cytotoxicity. The thionyl group is hydrolyzed by 3-aminonaphthalen-1-ol, leading to the release of hydrogen sulfide gas. Hydrogen sulfide gas is toxic for red blood cells and can cause hemolysis (the rupture of red blood cells).
