Mirtazapine is a tetracyclic antidepressant drug that is used to treat depression. Mirtazapine inhibits serotonin reuptake and has been shown to have an anxiolytic effect. This drug also increases the availability of norepinephrine, which may contribute to its antidepressant properties. Mirtazapine has low energy uptake and intermolecular hydrogen bond, which may be due to the presence of a skeleton with two phenyl rings. It has been shown that mirtazapine binds to serotonin receptors in the brain and blocks the uptake of serotonin by neurons, thereby increasing serotonergic neurotransmission. The use of mirtazapine in patients with major depressive disorder or generalized anxiety disorder has been shown to be effective in clinical trials.
