1-Allyl-3-(4-benzylphenyl)thiourea is a drug candidate for the treatment of tuberculosis. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity in a number of different biological systems, including in vitro studies on Mycobacterium tuberculosis and mycobacteria resistant to conventional drugs. 1-Allyl-3-(4-benzylphenyl)thiourea binds directly to the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to cell death. The drug candidate has also been evaluated in mice with life-threatening TB infections that were not responding to other treatments. 1-Allyl-3-(4-benzylphenyl)thiourea has shown efficacy against both drug sensitive and drug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which could make it an attractive therapeutic option for patients with life threatening TB infections.
