Bakkenolide IIA is a member of the Bakkenolide family, which is a group of natural products that show neuroprotective properties. Bakkenolide IIA ameliorates the effects of nasal damage in primary hippocampal neurons by inhibiting inflammatory damage and injury. Bakkenolide IIA has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and inhibit apoptosis in cerebral cells following inflammation. It also inhibits microglial activation through its ability to inhibit cytokine release from these cells. Bakkenolide IIA can be found in low levels in serum and may be used as a marker for inflammation.
