Phenylmaleic acid is a polycarboxylic acid that is synthesized by the oxidative carbonylation of fatty acids. It has a particle diameter of approximately 2-3 nm, and its reaction products are inorganic acids. Phenylmaleic acid is an acidic compound with redox potential values of -0.8 to -1.4 V (vs NHE). This compound can be used as an acid catalyst for reactions involving cationic surfactants and nanotubes, as well as for reactions involving amines or alcohols. Phenylmaleic acid also has been shown to react with hydroxyl groups on the surface of gold nanoparticles, which may be due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl group and the carboxylic group on phenylmaleic acid. The reaction mechanism for this process is not known, but it may involve proton transfer from phenylmaleic acid to the surface of gold nanoparticles.
