Naphth-1-ylglyoxal hydrate is an arylglyoxal with the molecular formula CHNO. It is a white crystalline solid that can be obtained from the reaction of pyrrole and mandelic acid in acetonitrile. The yield of this compound has been found to be greater than 95%. Naphth-1-ylglyoxal hydrate can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of other organic compounds, such as alkaloids and its derivatives. This compound also has optical activity, which can be determined by using the D-test or by measuring the specific rotation. When naphth-1-ylglyoxal hydrate is heated with an ester, it undergoes hydrolysis to produce acid methyl esters. Acid methyl esters are used in many chemical reactions as they have a high reactivity and selectivity.
