2-Amino-4-(3-amino-4-hydroxybenzyl)phenol is a low molecular weight, small molecule that is used as a chaperone for the treatment of congenital, cyclic, and noncyclic osmotic diuresis. This drug has shown efficacy in treating patients with impaired kidney function due to lead poisoning. 2-Amino-4-(3-amino-4-hydroxybenzyl)phenol binds to the adenosine receptor and inhibits the release of cyclic AMP and cAMP, which prevents water loss. This inhibition of water loss leads to increased urine osmolality. The molecular weight of this drug is also low enough that it can be filtered by the kidney without being reabsorbed into the bloodstream.
