Methyl biphenyl-2-carboxylate is a synthetic chemical that is used as an organic solvent in the preparation of other chemicals. It is also used in the treatment of wastewater, which contains biphenyl-2-carboxylic acid. Methyl biphenyl-2-carboxylate undergoes a number of acylation reactions, including those with caffeates and phenols. This chemical can be synthesized using liquid chromatography and preparative high performance liquid chromatography (prep HPLC). Industrialized methods for the synthesis include hydrogenation of methyl ester and cinnamic acid.
