2,3-Dimethyl-1H-indol-5-ylamine (DMI) is a ligand that binds to serotonin receptors and has been shown to cause blood pressure changes in animals. It is an analog of tryptamine, which is a structural analog of serotonin. DMI has been shown to be absorbed orally and crosses the blood brain barrier in rats. The binding affinity of DMI for serotonin receptors was determined by a number of assays including binding to model proteins and carotid artery preparations. This drug also has the ability to affect the release of nitric oxide from endothelial cells, which may be related to its ability to lower blood pressure.
