N,N-Diethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine Dihydrochloride (DEP) is a phospholipase that can be used to detect secretory phospholipase. This enzyme hydrolyzes the fatty acid ester bond of phosphatidylcholine and produces a fluorescent product. The fluorescence assay is based on the ability of DEP to produce fluorescence in response to changes in pH. DEP is also a surfactant that can be used for the synthesis of fluorophores. It has been shown to have a high hydrolysis rate and unmodified form, which can be used as a constant for fluorescence assays.
