Triphosgene is an organometallic compound that reacts with a variety of organic compounds, such as amines, chlorides, and other halides to form cross-coupling products. The reaction is catalyzed by magnesium which activates the triphosgene. Triphosgene reacts with nitrogen nucleophiles (such as ammonia) to produce aryl amines. Triphosgene has been used in the preparation of many pharmaceuticals including antibiotics, hormones, and anti-inflammatory drugs. As an example, it was used in the synthesis of 2-methoxyphenylmagnesium bromide from 2-bromoethanol and phenylmagnesium bromide in THF at 0.5 M concentration at room temperature for 24 hours.
