2-(1-Adamantyl)-1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione (AID) is a novel synthetic compound that has been shown to be effective in inducing necrosis in leukemia cells. AID induces apoptosis by binding to the receptor for tumor necrosis factor (TNF) with high affinity and specificity. It also binds to the thiol group of cysteine residues on proteins and inhibits protein synthesis by preventing the formation of peptide bonds between amino acids. The molecular modeling study showed that the electron deficiency of AID's skeleton plays an important role in its cytotoxicity against HL-60 cells. The carboxylate group of AID can be easily replaced with other groups, which enables it to be used as a scaffold for drug design.
