Trimethylsilyl Propionate is a protonated molecule that is used in the study of metabolic profiles. It reacts with epidermal growth factor (EGF) to produce a fragment of molecular weight 207 Da. Trimethylsilyl propionate has been shown to inhibit tumor vasculature and the growth of cancer cells. This compound also induces apoptosis in tumor cells by inhibiting the production of the EGF receptor, which results in decreased levels of protein synthesis and cell proliferation. Trimethylsilyl propionate has been shown to be effective in fetal bovine serum as an alternative solvent for proteins and peptides.
