1-Phenyl-1,3-butadiene is a monomer that belongs to the group of polyenes. It has two isomers: cis-1-phenyl-1,3-butadiene and trans-1-phenyl-1,3-butadiene. This compound can be polymerized in the presence of anionic or cationic initiators to form copolymers. It is also possible to use 1-phenyl-1,3 butadiene as a monomer for ionization techniques such as electron bombardment mass spectroscopy (EI) or matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight (MALDI TOF). The kinetic product distribution of styrene and 1 phenyl butadiene can be determined by using deuterium isotope effects on the rate of hydration.
