Tetramethylammonium acetate hydrate is a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) inhibitor that binds to the DNA polymerase, preventing it from synthesizing DNA. Tetramethylammonium acetate hydrate is a powerful inhibitor of PCR and can be used as a sample preparation step for the analysis of other substances. It has been shown to inhibit PCR with human serum and wastewater samples, as well as metal hydroxides. Tetramethylammonium acetate hydrate also binds to dna duplexes, which leads to inhibition of DNA replication.
