Dimethyl (2-oxo-4-phenylbutyl)phosphonate is a synthetic, hydroxylated compound that has been used in the synthesis of latanoprost lactol. This product is a white or light yellow crystalline powder with a molecular formula of C14H18O3P and molecular weight of 272. The impurities found in this product are cyclopentane ring and chloride. Dimethyl (2-oxo-4-phenylbutyl)phosphonate is an isomeric with dimethyl (2-oxo-5-(1,1′-biphenyl)-3′(2′H)-furanone).
Dimethyl (2-Oxo-4-phenylbutyl)phosphonate can be synthesized in two steps from 2-(acetoxy)-pyridine via Wittig reaction and chlorination.
