Isooctadecylsuccinic anhydride is a low molecular weight, polyolefin-based monocarboxylic acid. It is synthesized by the reaction of a mixture of branched chain isomers of octadecylsuccinic anhydride with ethylene and an alkali metal. The product is used as a chemical intermediate in the production of fluorinated fatty acids that are used to make fluorine-containing surfactants. Isooctadecylsuccinic anhydride also has low toxicity, which makes it useful as a chemical intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals.
