Product Information
4-Cyclohexylbut-3-en-2-one is an unsaturated ketone that is produced from the oxidation of cyclohexanone. The esterification of 4-cyclohexylbut-3-en-2-one with a variety of alcohols, including ethanol and butanol, yielded esters with interesting properties. These compounds were screened for their ability to inhibit the growth of Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. The β-unsaturated ketones were found to be especially potent in inhibiting the growth of these bacteria. The Baeyer-Villiger oxidation reaction was used to synthesize these ketones in high yields. Hydrogen peroxide was used as the oxidant agent, which provided high yields without generating any byproducts. This process can be optimized to produce other unsaturated ketones in high yields by using different oxidants or oxidizing agents.
