Naphthalene-1,8-diol has significant antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Pyogenes. Naphthalene-1,8-diol inhibits the growth of E. coli. It also has a phytotoxic effect on plants and is used as an ammonium compound in the manufacture of pesticides. Naphthalene-1,8-diol is soluble in solvents such as chloroform and acetone, which makes it easier to apply topically or by injection. The antimicrobial activity of naphthalene-1,8-diol is due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of proteins essential for bacterial growth by inhibiting the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase.
