1,2,3,4-Tetrahydropyrazino[1,2-a]indole is an undescribed compound which has been shown to act as a cyclodehydration agent and undergoes the cyclization of the carbon-carbon double bond to form an iminium ion. The hydrogen atoms at C-1 and C-2 are then removed by thioketene to form two carbenes that react with each other. This reaction is non-selective and will take place even with unreactive aldehydes such as acetaldehyde. This process is catalyzed by endogenous adenosine. 1,2,3,4-Tetrahydropyrazino[1,2-a]indole has also been shown to have affinity for melatonin receptors in rat brains.
