It is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 70°C. 2,4,6-Trimethylbenzeneacetic acid methyl ester can undergo Friedel-Crafts acylation to give benzophenones. The reaction requires heating and a strong base such as sodium hydroxide or potassium tertiary butoxide. The product of this reaction has optical activity depending on the configuration of the starting material. This reaction also requires a catalyst such as aluminum chloride or zinc chloride for optimal yield.
2,4,6-Trimethylbenzeneacetic acid methyl ester is also capable of undergoing hydrolysis under acidic conditions to form benzoic acid and 2-methylbutane-1,4-diol.
