2-(Methylsulfonyl)acetamide is a growth factor that binds to the receptor for fibroblast growth factor. It has been shown to increase systolic pressure and cardiac output in rats, as well as prolonging survival in animals with myocardial infarcts. 2-(Methylsulfonyl)acetamide also inhibits bacterial growth by denaturing proteins and interfering with the synthesis of fatty acids and hydroxylated compounds necessary for bacterial cell wall formation. The pharmacokinetic properties of 2-(methylsulfonyl)acetamide have been studied in mice where it was found to be excreted unchanged in urine and bile, but not in feces. This drug also has an effect on skeletal muscle cells, inducing their proliferation.
