Tianeptine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that is used to treat depression. It has been demonstrated to have antidepressant effects in animals, and has been shown to increase the extracellular levels of glutamate in the hippocampus. Tianeptine may be effective in treating diseases such as infectious disease, bowel disease, and toll-like receptor (TLR) activation. The mechanism of action for tianeptine is not fully understood; however, it is believed that it acts by inhibiting glutamate uptake into presynaptic neurons and increasing serotonin levels in the brain. This drug also has an effect on receptors, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the binding of certain drugs to their receptors or block the activity of certain receptors.
