2-o-Tolyl-succinic acid is a succinic acid derivative that is synthesized by the reaction of o-tolylacetonitrile with potassium chloroacetate in an aqueous solution. 2-o-Tolyl-succinic acid can be used to produce alkylated nitriles, and has been shown to selectively react with primary and secondary amines. This compound hydrolyzes to form succinic, propionic, and acetic acids. 2-o-Tolyl-succinic acid can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of other compounds, such as 2-(2'-pyridyloxy)propionic acid.
