1-Methyl-4-nitro-1H-indole is an organic compound that contains nitrogen. It can be synthesized by refluxing potassium in alcohol with nitric acid and then adding a solution of oxalic acid in dimethylformamide. The yield is high and the product is a white solid. This compound can be used to make alkoxides, which are compounds containing an oxygen atom bonded to the carbon atom in an alkyl group. This process can be done by reacting 1-methyl-4-nitro-1H-indole with sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, or hydrogen peroxide.
