This compound can be used to make alkoxides, which are compounds containing an oxygen atom bonded to the carbon atom in an alkyl group. This process can be done by reacting 1-methyl-4-nitro-1H-indole with sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, or hydrogen peroxide.
