1,10-Phenanthroline-5-carbaldehyde (1,10-PCA) is a compound that has potential use in cancer therapy. It can act as an alkylating agent and is also used to produce luminescent probes with optical properties such as fluorescence, phosphorescence and chemiluminescence. 1,10-PCA has been shown to be a strong promoter of the oxidation of alcohols and aldehydes (e.g., benzyl alcohol). The carbonyl group in 1,10-PCA reacts with ruthenium complexes to form a luminescent Ru(II) complex. This reaction enhances the luminescence properties of the Ru(II) complex.
