The mechanism for this reaction is not known, but it has been proposed that it proceeds through a series of steps:
Sodium hydroxide + S → Sodium sulfide
Sodium sulfide + H2O → Hydrogen sulfide + Sodium thiosulfate
Hydrogen sulfide + S → Sodium sulfite
Sodium sulfite + H2O → Hydrogen sulfate + Sodium hydrosulfite
This yields the desired product and water as byproducts.
