Description:
5-Chloro-2-phenylthiazole is structurally related to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, which is a herbicide. 5-Chloro-2-phenylthiazole has been shown to be a preactivator of the plant enzyme phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL). PAL catalyses the conversion of the amino acid phenylalanine into the plant hormone indole acetic acid (IAA). This mechanism is similar to that of other preactivators such as sulfonylurea herbicides and organophosphorus insecticides. 5-Chloro-2-phenylthiazole also has an inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria and fungi.
