2-(4-(Methylamino)phenyl)benzo[d]thiazol-6-ol (NBDT) is a positron-emitting chemical that is used in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. NBDT is a small molecule that binds to amyloid beta, which are proteins that form the plaques and tangles found in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease. The binding of NBDT to amyloid beta enhances the uptake of NBDT by neurons, leading to their death. This process can be detected by positron emission tomography (PET). PET scans have been shown to be useful for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease and providing an early measure of its progression.
