Chlorodimethyl(3-phenylpropyl)silane is an organosilicon compound that has been used as a catalyst in the ring-opening polymerization of alpha,beta-unsaturated esters. It has also been used to synthesize catecholamines by chlorination and sulfonation of phenylethylamine. Chlorodimethyl(3-phenylpropyl)silane is soluble in organic solvents such as ether, benzene, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride and reacts with alkali metals to form Grignard reagents.
The infrared spectrum of chlorodimethyl(3-phenylpropyl)silane shows absorption bands at 1750 cm−1 (C=S), 1630 cm−1 (C=O), 1425 cm−1 (C=C), 1265 cm−1 (CH), 1160 cm−1 (CH), 1090 cm−1
