Sodium 3-chlorobenzoate (SOCB) is the sodium salt of 3-chlorobenzoic acid. SOCB is used as an ion-exchange resin for the removal of metal ions from water and wastewater. It degrades to release chloride ions, carbon dioxide, and benzoic acid. SOCB has been shown to be effective in removing chromium(III) from industrial wastewater. In addition, it can also remove lead(II), nickel(II), copper(II), and zinc(II). The reaction between SOCB and these metals occurs through nucleophilic substitution reactions in which SOCB acts as a nucleophile that attacks the metal cation to form a new compound with a different charge.
The rate of this reaction is dependent on pH, temperature, and the concentration of both SOCB and metal ion present. When SOCB is exposed to anaerobic conditions, it forms small nanomaterials with a morphology that varies according to
