1-(Cyanomethyl)pyridinium chloride is a synthetic compound that has been shown to have potent activity against plant cells. It binds to copper ions and is found in the active site of the enzyme, preventing substrate binding and thereby inhibiting the synthesis of chlorophyll. This process is thought to be due to 1-(cyanomethyl)pyridinium chloride's ability to form coordination complexes with copper ions in plants. 1-(Cyanomethyl)pyridinium chloride also inhibits protein synthesis by cleaving peptide bonds.
