Potassium heptadecanoate is a fatty acid that has been used in the production of photoreceptors. It is soluble in water, and has a bactericidal effect on gram-positive bacteria. Potassium heptadecanoate has synergistic effects when combined with an inorganic acid such as phosphite or an organic acid such as acetic acid. This compound also has an inhibitory effect on fatty acid esterification, which may be due to its ability to decarboxylate the fatty acids.
