2,8-Dimethyl-1H,2H,3H,4H,4aH,5H,9bh-pyrido[4,3-b]indole is a natural product that has been shown to have antioxidant properties. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as tyrosinase and glutathione peroxidase. In addition to its antioxidant properties it also inhibits the activities of inflammatory mediators such as COX2 and cytokines. This compound has been found to be effective against infectious diseases such as HIV and malaria. The hydrogenated form of 2,8-dimethyl-1H,2H,3H,4H,4aH,5H,9bh-pyrido[4,3-b]indole is more toxic than the nonhydrogenated form.
