Barium bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate) hydrate is a white crystalline solid that can be used as an activator for the solubility of barium sulfate in water. It is also used in thermogravimetric analysis and thermogravimetric methods to measure the activation energy of a reaction. Barium bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate) hydrate has a low vapor pressure and is not volatile. The compound decomposes when heated above its boiling point of approximately 300°C and at higher temperatures undergoes hydrolysis to form barium bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptanedionate) dihydrate and water.
