4-Chlorophthalonitrile is a synthetic, fluorescent probe that can be used to detect the presence of cancer cells. It reacts with DNA and RNA in tumor cells, which leads to a high fluorescence signal. This probe is also sensitive to changes in pH and temperature. 4-Chlorophthalonitrile can be used for optical imaging of tumor tissue, as well as diagnosis of cancer using bioluminescence imaging (BLI) or infrared fluorescence imaging (IRFI). The cross-coupling reaction between 4-chlorophthalonitrile and reactive amino groups on proteins results in the formation of an adduct that undergoes a characteristic titration calorimetry (TC) reaction.
