It has been shown to be an effective drug for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, due to its ability to bind with serotonin transporter gene. 5-(3-(Dimethylamino)propyl)phenanthridin-6(5H)-one is used in pharmaceutical dosage forms and as a diagnostic agent. The drug can be reconstituted with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, such as saline or water, for injection into patients. When administered intravenously, 5-(3-(Dimethylamino)propyl)phenanthridin-6(5H)-one binds to serotonin transporter gene and prevents the reuptake of serotonin by cells in the gastrointestinal tract.
